Georgia State (1–3) entered the matchup against James Madison (3–1) looking to end a four-game losing streak to the Dukes. Saturday’s contest marked the first conference game of the season for the Panthers.
Despite their record, Georgia State has shown flashes of promise, and that was evident early on. With 4:03 left in the first quarter, quarterback TJ Finley connected with Camden Overton-Howard for a 19-yard touchdown, putting the Panthers up 7–0. The Dukes struggled through the first quarter—failing to score, committing six penalties, and not converting a single third-down attempt.
In the second quarter, Georgia State’s defense stayed disciplined, holding James Madison to under 100 yards and keeping the Dukes’ top rushers in check. At halftime, the Panthers led 7–0, recording 164 total yards with 126 through the air and 38 on the ground. Georgia State also converted 60% of its third-downs, while James Madison managed just 25% and 145 total yards.
The Dukes adjusted after the break, leaning on their ground game. With under seven minutes left in the third quarter, Wayne Knight broke loose for 22 yards, coming up just shy of the end zone. On the next play, quarterback Alonza Barnett III punched it in from a yard out to tie the game at 7–7. Knight and Jordan Fuller fueled the Dukes’ momentum, each with 70 rushing yards by the end of the third. Meanwhile, Georgia State’s offense stalled, losing 14 yards on the ground in the quarter.
In the fourth, the Dukes continued their rushing dominance. Fuller’s 15-yard run set up a 9-yard touchdown by Knight, giving James Madison a 14–7 lead. Georgia State’s offense faltered late, failing to convert on a crucial 4th-and-18 with 1:55 left, giving the Dukes possession deep in Panther territory. On 4th-and-1, a Georgia State offsides penalty gave JMU an automatic first down, effectively sealing the game.
The Panthers finished with 15 penalties and only 37 rushing yards. Coach McGee emphasized postgame that improving the running game remains a priority but praised his team’s defensive effort.
Georgia State drops to 1–4 overall and 0–1 in conference play, returning home to face Appalachian State on October 11 at 3:30 p.m. EST during Homecoming Week. James Madison improves to 4–1 (2–0 Sun Belt).
