Penalty Trouble Costs Gladiators in 4-0 Loss to Utah

The Utah Grizzlies closed the chapter on their rivalry with the Atlanta Gladiators on Saturday night, earning a 4-0 win at Maverik Center in the final meeting between the two teams.

Utah goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo delivered a flawless performance, stopping all 20 shots he faced to record his 10th professional shutout in his first appearance of the season and his debut with the Grizzlies. Kaskisuo signed with Utah earlier in the week and immediately made his presence felt.

Atlanta entered the game having won four of the previous meetings in the season series. Ethan Haider got the start in goal for the Gladiators, while Utah countered with Kaskisuo.

On Teddy Bear Toss Night, the Grizzlies wasted little time energizing the home crowd. Evan Friesen opened the scoring with 3:05 remaining in the first period, burying a rebound in front to give Utah a 1-0 lead and send stuffed animals raining onto the ice. Utah controlled play early, outshooting Atlanta 13-5 in the opening frame.

The second period featured a physical edge as emotions boiled over midway through the game. Louis Boudon and Griffin Ness dropped the gloves at the 8:02 mark, setting the tone for a tense stretch that followed. Penalty trouble proved costly for Atlanta, as Utah capitalized with three power play goals across the second and third periods.

Neil Shea doubled the Grizzlies’ lead late in the second period, scoring on a power play with 6:30 remaining after cleaning up a rebound from the far circle. Tyler Gratton and Aiden Hansen-Bukata earned assists on the play.

The period ended with controversy and urgency. Following a hard hit by Maxim Barbashev on Andrew Jarvis, Ryan Nolan stepped in to defend his teammate and was assessed an instigating penalty. After officials reviewed the clock, 1.1 seconds were added back. Utah won the ensuing faceoff, and with just .3 seconds remaining, Lebster fired home a power play goal to make it 3-0. Luke Manning earned the assist after winning the draw.

Utah continued to dictate play in the third period as Atlanta struggled to generate sustained offense. Luke Manning added the final goal of the night on another power play 9:02 into the period, with Shea and Robbie Stucker picking up assists.

Utah finished the game with a 34-20 advantage in shots. Haider turned aside 30 shots in the loss, while Atlanta went scoreless on three power play opportunities and killed three of six penalties.

Despite the loss, the Gladiators wrapped up the season series with a 4-1 record against Utah and finished the all time series 7-2-2 versus the Grizzlies. Atlanta now sits at 16-6 on the season.

The Gladiators return home Friday night to host the Jacksonville Icemen at Gas South Arena for Marvel Night. Atlanta will wear Fantastic Four themed specialty jerseys, which will be auctioned off following the game. Fans can also take advantage of ticket packages that include a kids superhero cape.
