Sandy Creek Survives Late North Clayton Rally, 28-19

Sandy Creek pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat North Clayton 28-19 in a back-and-forth battle that saw four lead changes and a game that stretched into extra innings of drama befitting the moment.

North Clayton struck first, with Justin Murphy punching in a 5-yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring. The extra point sailed wide, leaving the score at 6-0. Sandy Creek answered before the quarter closed, with Caleb Hill capping a methodical drive with a short rushing touchdown and converting the point after to take a 7-6 lead heading into the second quarter.

The teams traded blows throughout the second period. Dre’von Glass broke free for a 35-yard rushing score to put North Clayton back on top 13-7, but Sandy Creek responded again, this time with Tyrann Williams punching one in from a yard out to retake the lead, 14-13. North Clayton had a chance to answer late in the half after recovering a Sandy Creek fumble deep in enemy territory, but the defense held and the two teams went to the break with Sandy Creek clinging to a one-point edge.

Sandy Creek came out of halftime and seized control. After forcing a fumble deep in North Clayton territory early in the third quarter, Caleb Hill punched in another short touchdown run, and the extra point stretched the lead to 21-13. North Clayton’s Deanthony Grooms came up with a momentum-halting interception late in the period, but the Wolves couldn’t find the end zone before the quarter expired, and Sandy Creek carried its eight-point cushion into the fourth.

The final period opened with Sandy Creek putting the game further out of reach, as Caleb Hill connected with Cornelius Jenkins on a 45-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead to 28-13. North Clayton refused to go quietly, though. Justin Murphy connected with Dre’von Glass on a long pass to set up North Clayton deep in Sandy Creek territory, then finished the drive himself with an 8-yard touchdown run. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, keeping the door only slightly ajar at 28-19.

North Clayton needed the ball back and needed it quickly, but after trading possessions with Sandy Creek in the closing minutes, the clock ran out before the Wolves could mount another scoring threat. Sandy Creek held on for the 28-19 victory, closing out a game defined by momentum swings, timely turnovers, and touchdowns coming in bunches on both sides of the ball.
