Georgia State entered its Homecoming matchup against Appalachian State still searching for its first win against the Mountaineers, coming in 0–11 all time. Their last meeting on October 26, 2024, ended in a 33–26 loss in Boone, and the Panthers were hoping to flip the script this time on their home turf.
Coming off a 17–7 loss to James Madison, Georgia State aimed to clean up turnovers and establish the run game early. The defense opened strong, forcing a three-and-out on Appalachian State’s first drive, holding the Mountaineers to under 90 seconds of possession. The Panthers’ offense responded with a promising start, recording 20 yards on two attempts, but an early field goal attempt was blocked.
With just over a minute left in the first quarter, Appalachian State’s JJ Kohl connected with Davion Dozier on a 12-yard touchdown to take a 7–0 lead.
The second quarter was a defensive grind for both teams until the Mountaineers pieced together an 83-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Barnes, extending their lead to 14–0. Costly Georgia State penalties on the Mountaineers’ final possession of the half led to a late field goal, sending the Panthers into the locker room trailing 17–0.

Offensively, Georgia State struggled to gain traction in the first half, managing just 33 total yards and finishing with –2 yards rushing in the second quarter. The defense spent extended time on the field as Appalachian State dominated time of possession by nearly five minutes.
The Mountaineers came out firing in the second half, scoring on their first two possessions, a 14-yard rushing touchdown from Jaquari Lewis followed by a 6-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Stroman, pushing the lead to 31–0.
Quarterback Cameron Brown sparked some momentum for the Panthers late in the third quarter with an 8-yard rushing touchdown to cap a 12-play, 75-yard drive. After a failed two-point attempt, Georgia State trailed 31–6. Appalachian State responded immediately with another score to make it 38–6, but the Panthers struck again when Brown found Grant Hollier for a 15-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion trimmed the deficit to 38–14 at the end of the third quarter.
For the first time all game, Georgia State outgained Appalachian State in total yards (188–154) and led in time of possession (9:16–5:44) in the quarter.
In the fourth, Appalachian State extended its lead with a 46-yard field goal from Dominic De Freitas. Georgia State continued to fight, adding a late 22-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Javon Robinson to close the gap to 41–20, but the Mountaineers held firm to secure the victory.
Despite showing flashes of offensive rhythm, Georgia State’s run game once again fell short, failing to reach 100 rushing yards.
“We gotta take some pressure off our O-line,” said head coach Dell McGee. “We gotta find five guys that are willing to sustain blocks in the run game.”
McGee also noted that there are some things going on internally with a few guys on the team that he did not want to discuss publicly, indicating the Panthers are managing more than just on-field adjustments as they work to get back on track.
The Panthers finished with 381 total yards while allowing 435, marking the fourth time this season they’ve surrendered over 400 yards of total offense, and the third time opponents have passed for more than 300 yards.
With the loss, Georgia State falls to 1–5 overall and 0–2 in Sun Belt play, sitting at the bottom of the East Division.
Next up, the Panthers travel to Statesboro to face in-state rival Georgia Southern (2–4, 0–2 Sun Belt) in a 6:00 p.m. EDT kickoff.
