Trey Lance, once a highly-touted prospect and the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, may be heading north of the border. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is reportedly on the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ negotiation list, according to Justin Dunk of 3DownNation.
Lance’s NFL journey has been turbulent, to say the least. Coming out of North Dakota State, he entered the league with immense potential despite a limited college résumé—only 19 games played, with his 2020 season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Drafted to be the future of the 49ers, Lance’s time in San Francisco was cut short by injuries and inconsistency. He started just a handful of games in his first two seasons and suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2 of the 2022 season. During his recovery, rookie sensation Brock Purdy emerged, ultimately pushing Lance out of the picture.
Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, but he never found his footing in Dallas either. On May 1, 2024, the Cowboys declined his fifth-year option, setting him up to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
Now, the once-promising quarterback could be eyeing a fresh start in the Canadian Football League. By adding Lance to their negotiation list, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have secured exclusive rights to negotiate with him should he choose to continue his career in the CFL. Each CFL team can hold up to 45 players on this list, representing potential future signings.
As Lance’s NFL options narrow, the question looms: where will he play in 2025? A move to Canada could be the reset his career needs—or a sign of how far he’s fallen from first-round expectations.
