Spring Surge, Summer Reign: The WNBA’s Biggest Year Yet

We haven’t even hit summer, but the WNBA is already making history.

From sold-out season openers to viral rivalries and sky-high viewership, women’s basketball is dominating headlines, timelines, and TV screens. The 2025 season tipped off with unmatched energy — and it’s not slowing down. Fans are showing up, networks are taking notice, and the buzz online? Louder than ever.

If this is just the spring surge, the summer reign is going to be unstoppable.

The Spark Before the Surge

This didn’t come out of nowhere. The Unrivaled tour, launched earlier this year by stars like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, helped prime the pump.

Though it took place before the season, Unrivaled offered a fresh take on what women’s basketball could be: player-led, fan-first, and unapologetically bold. It kept fans engaged during the offseason and proved that demand for women’s hoops doesn’t stop when the W takes a break.

Unrivaled laid the foundation. Spring is now writing the story.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

The WNBA opened the 2025 season with sold-out arenas for top franchises like the Indiana Fever, Las Vegas Aces, and New York Liberty. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert shared that ticket sales are up 45% year-over-year, and merchandise sales have skyrocketed thanks to breakout stars and modern branding.

On the screen? Even bigger.

WNBA games are now averaging 2.2 million viewers, a 58% increase from last year, according to Nielsen. Prime-time slots on ESPN, ABC, and other major networks are becoming the norm, not the exception.

Last Saturday’s showdown between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, featuring stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, drew an average of 2.7 million viewers on ABC — peaking at 3.1 million. It became the most-watched WNBA regular-season game in 25 years, and the second most-viewed WNBA broadcast ever, trailing only the 2024 All-Star Game.

The Energy Online Is Loud

What’s happening on the court is huge — but what’s happening online might be even louder.

Fans are meme-ing moments in real time. Players are dominating cultural convos. Rivalries are going viral. This generation of W stars has both game and voice, and audiences are engaging with every angle.

🗣️ “It’s not just about basketball. It’s about movement.”
🗣️ “Caitlin, Angel, A’ja, Sabrina, Paige… this season is STACKED.”
🗣️ “Women’s sports isn’t growing. It’s TAKING OVER.”

Paige Bueckers, the Wings’ first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, has quickly become one of the league’s brightest stars. This season, she’s averaging an impressive 19.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game with a 53.1% field goal percentage, showcasing the elite talent driving the league forward.
