The Atlanta Falcons were outgained and outrushed by the San Francisco 49ers, but they forced four turnovers without committing one of their own and held on for a 29-20 victory.
San Francisco finished with 411 yards of offense to Atlanta’s 295 and averaged 5.3 yards per carry to the Falcons’ 2.8. Brock Purdy completed 27 of 40 passes for 288 yards. Those numbers were undone by two interceptions and two lost fumbles, which gave the Falcons extra possessions and kept them in front for most of the second half.
Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was efficient and mistake-free, completing 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, a 118.9 passer rating. Drake London led Atlanta with seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Bijan Robinson carried 20 times for 63 yards and added five catches for 59 yards. Kyle Pitts caught five passes and a touchdown, and Nick Muse hauled in a touchdown of his own.
San Francisco struck first. Christian McCaffrey scored from a yard out to finish a 10-play, 64-yard opening drive. Atlanta answered after Zachariah Branch returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards to the San Francisco 36, setting up a 39-yard Nick Folk field goal. The 49ers extended their lead to 14-3 on the first play of the second quarter, when Kaelon Black broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run.
The Falcons cut into the deficit on a 10-play, 68-yard drive that ended with Penix’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Muse. The extra point hit the right upright, leaving it 14-9. Folk added a 33-yard field goal as the first half expired, and Atlanta went into the break trailing 14-12.
The second half belonged to the Falcons. Atlanta took the opening possession of the third quarter 59 yards in 10 plays, finishing with a 5-yard Penix touchdown pass to Pitts for a 19-14 lead. Late in the quarter, Purdy’s pass intended for Jacob Cowing was intercepted by Jessie Bates III at the Atlanta 10. Atlanta then drove 90 yards in 11 plays, with Penix connecting with London from 21 yards out on the first snap of the fourth quarter to make it 26-14.
San Francisco had a chance to answer, but the drive fell apart. A 23-yard Purdy touchdown pass to Jordan Watkins was overturned on replay, and the 49ers failed to convert on their next three snaps. Za’Darius Smith sacked Purdy on fourth down, and the Falcons took over.

The 49ers did not go away. Purdy led an 82-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk with 5:09 remaining, though the extra point sailed wide left and Atlanta held a 26-20 lead. After the teams traded possessions, Purdy was intercepted by Kendal Daniels at the San Francisco 48 on third down. Daniels returned the pick 29 yards to the 49ers’ 19. Atlanta then ran the clock down to two minutes before Folk kicked a 31-yard field goal, pushing the lead to 29-20.
San Francisco got one last chance and moved to the Atlanta 41, but George Kittle fumbled after a 22-yard catch with under a minute to play. Bates forced the ball loose, and Daniels recovered it at the Atlanta 20. Penix took three knees to close it out.
Daniels was the defensive standout with 11 tackles, an interception and the game-sealing fumble recovery. Bates added nine tackles, an interception and a forced fumble, and Harold Perkins Jr. also finished with nine stops. Maason Smith and Za’Darius Smith each recorded a sack. For San Francisco, Fred Warner led all defenders with 13 tackles and Dre Greenlaw had 12. Kittle caught eight passes for 88 yards, and McCaffrey finished with 39 rushing yards and a touchdown to go with six receptions for 61 yards. Black led the 49ers on the ground with 63 yards on 12 carries.
Atlanta’s offense never turned the ball over, and Folk converted all three of his field goal attempts. The 49ers outproduced the Falcons nearly everywhere in the box score, but the turnover margin decided the game.
The Falcons will look to carry that momentum on the road in Week 8, when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 1:00 p.m. EST.
