Georgia State Looks to Rebound Against Arkansas State in Key Sun Belt Showdown

Georgia State returns to the road Saturday night looking to bounce back from its first Sun Belt Conference loss of the season when the Panthers face Arkansas State at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+ as Georgia State (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) takes on Arkansas State (3-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) in a matchup featuring two offenses with contrasting strengths and plenty at stake in conference play.

The Panthers enter the contest after a 49-22 loss to James Madison on Oct. 17. Despite the defeat, Georgia State finished with 373 total yards, including 188 rushing yards and 185 passing yards. Quarterback Cameran Brown accounted for 205 yards of total offense, throwing for 134 yards and a touchdown while adding 71 yards on the ground.

Georgia State will look to rediscover the offensive rhythm that helped it open the season with four wins in its first five games. The Panthers are averaging 36.5 points and 452.7 total yards per game, ranking second in the Sun Belt in total offense.

Brown has been central to that production. Through six games, he has completed 102 of 156 passes for 1,291 yards and 13 touchdowns, with five interceptions. He has also contributed 183 rushing yards and a touchdown, giving him 1,474 total offensive yards this season.

The Panthers have multiple weapons in the running game. Lanear McCrary Jr. leads the team with 385 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 78 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt. Freshman Qwantavius Wiggins has added 251 rushing yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.5 yards per carry.

Through six games, Georgia State has rushed for 1,236 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 206 yards per contest. Establishing that ground attack could be critical against an Arkansas State defense allowing 194 rushing yards per game.

The Panthers also present a threat through the air. Wide receiver Rodshaun Dorsey leads Georgia State with 333 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 21 receptions. His ability to stretch the field and finish drives gives Brown a proven target in the passing game.

Defensively, Georgia State has recorded 19 sacks and 38 tackles for loss through six games. The Panthers will look to pressure Arkansas State quarterback Trey Owens and disrupt an offense averaging 366 yards per game.

Owens has thrown for 1,631 yards and nine touchdowns through seven games, completing 68.7 percent of his passes. However, he has also thrown six interceptions. Hunter Summers leads the Red Wolves with 422 receiving yards and three touchdowns, while Chauncy Cobb has contributed 357 receiving yards.

Arkansas State enters the matchup following a 23-13 victory over Southern Miss. The Red Wolves will look to build on that performance while taking advantage of home-field conditions. They are averaging 27.4 points per game and have recorded 13 rushing touchdowns this season.

Defensively, Arkansas State is led by Joe Drew, who has recorded 64 total tackles, including 35 solo stops. The Red Wolves will need a disciplined performance to contain Brown and a Georgia State offense that averages more than 450 yards per game.

The series history favors Arkansas State, which holds a 7-2 advantage over Georgia State. The Red Wolves have won all four previous meetings played in Jonesboro, making Saturday’s contest another opportunity for the Panthers to secure their first road victory in the series.

Georgia State has demonstrated its offensive potential throughout the season, including a program-record six touchdown passes from Brown in a 42-10 win over Old Dominion on Oct. 3. The challenge now is translating that production into a consistent performance away from home against a conference opponent looking to improve its standing.

For the Panthers, the keys will be protecting the football, sustaining drives and maintaining defensive pressure. For Arkansas State, limiting Georgia State’s rushing attack and forcing Owens into difficult passing situations could help swing the game in the Red Wolves’ favor.

With both teams looking to gain momentum in Sun Belt play, Saturday’s matchup presents an important opportunity for Georgia State to respond after last week’s setback and for Arkansas State to defend its home field.
