The city of Atlanta will honor the life and legacy of NBA Hall of Famer and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo with a public memorial on May 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion. This event is open to all and will feature tributes, musical performances, and reflections on Mutombo’s impactful career and philanthropic endeavors.
A Legacy Beyond the Court
Mutombo, who passed away in September 2024 at the age of 58 after battling brain cancer, was renowned not only for his defensive prowess on the basketball court but also for his extensive humanitarian work. An eight-time NBA All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year, he left an indelible mark during his 18-season career, including significant years with the Atlanta Hawks.
Off the court, Mutombo’s commitment to global health and education initiatives was unwavering. In 1997, he founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, aiming to improve health, education, and quality of life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One of his most notable contributions is the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa, which has provided care to over one million patients, regardless of their ability to pay.
Continuing the Mission
In honor of Mutombo’s enduring legacy, his family has established the Dikembe Mutombo Memorial Fund. This fund supports organizations such as the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, Friends of Africa, Piedmont Brain Tumor Center, Hosea Helps, and the Shepherd Center, focusing on medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for spinal cord and brain injuries. Rose Mutombo, Dikembe’s wife, expressed gratitude for the community’s support: “Atlanta has been our home for almost thirty years, and the outpouring of love and support for Dikembe has been overwhelming. In recognition of this incredible community and all the wonderful people who stood alongside Dikembe throughout his journey, we wanted to create a space for everyone to celebrate his life and the profound impact he had in this community and throughout the world.”
