USMNT Opens FIFA World Cup 2026 Against Paraguay With Blend of Experience and New Faces

The United States Men’s National Team begins its FIFA World Cup 2026 journey Friday night when it takes on Paraguay in front of a home crowd at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. The match marks the opening step in what the Americans hope will be a deeper World Cup run after reaching the Round of 16 in Qatar four years ago.

For a team balancing proven veterans and emerging talent, the 26 man roster reflects both continuity and evolution.

Thirteen players return from the 2022 World Cup squad, tying a U.S. record for the most returning players between consecutive World Cups. Among those veterans are familiar names such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Tim Weah, Antonee Robinson, Sergiño Dest and goalkeeper Matt Turner.

That experience could prove invaluable as the United States navigates a challenging Group D that includes Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye.

Leading the charge is Pulisic, the team’s most experienced player with 86 international appearances. The AC Milan forward remains one of the most important pieces of the American attack and enters the tournament as one of only four U.S. players in history to record at least three goal contributions in a single World Cup. His performances in Qatar helped propel the Americans into the knockout rounds and established him as one of the faces of U.S. Soccer.

While the veteran core remains intact, head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s influence is evident throughout the roster.

Since taking over in September 2024, Pochettino has expanded the player pool significantly, giving opportunities to dozens of players from leagues across the globe. According to U.S. Soccer, 62 different players earned caps during his tenure leading into the World Cup, creating one of the deepest evaluation processes in recent program history.

The result is a roster that combines established stars with players who have earned their place through recent performances.

Forwards Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright provide scoring options alongside Pulisic and Weah. In midfield, Adams and McKennie bring leadership and World Cup experience, while players such as Malik Tillman and Gio Reyna add creativity and attacking versatility. Defensively, the United States will rely on the leadership of Tim Ream and the athleticism of Robinson, Chris Richards and Miles Robinson.

The roster also highlights the growing global footprint of American soccer. Players represent clubs from England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, Mexico, Spain and Major League Soccer, illustrating the increasingly international development pathway for American talent.

Standing in the way of an opening victory is a Paraguay squad returning to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2010.

Paraguay qualified through a difficult South American campaign that included victories over both Brazil and Argentina. Led by head coach Gustavo Alfaro, the South Americans arrive with confidence and a roster featuring several players competing in top leagues around the world. Midfielder Matías Galarza will be a familiar name to Atlanta soccer fans, currently playing for Atlanta United.

History slightly favors the Americans in the matchup. The United States holds a 5-2-2 all time record against Paraguay and most recently defeated them 2-1 in November 2025 behind goals from Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun. The two nations also share a unique place in World Cup history, having met during the inaugural tournament in 1930 when the United States earned a 3-0 victory behind Bert Patenaude’s historic hat trick, the first ever recorded at a FIFA World Cup.

Friday’s opener represents more than just three points.

It is the beginning of a month that could define the next chapter of American soccer. With a talented roster, home field support and heightened expectations, the United States enters FIFA World Cup 2026 looking to prove it belongs among the world’s elite.

The journey starts against Paraguay.
