The New York Knicks added a long-awaited trophy to the franchise’s history Tuesday night, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 124–113 in Las Vegas to capture the 2025 Emirates NBA Cup. The victory marked the Knicks’ first NBA-sanctioned title since 1973, ending a 52-year drought without championship silverware.

While the NBA Cup does not carry the same weight as an NBA Finals championship, the moment was undeniably significant for a franchise long defined by near misses, rebuilding years, and unmet expectations. For the Knicks, the win represents tangible progress under a core that has steadily pushed the team back into relevance in the Eastern Conference.

Jalen Brunson was named NBA Cup MVP, further cementing his role as the face of the franchise. His leadership and consistency throughout the tournament anchored New York on both ends of the floor. In the championship game, OG Anunoby led all scorers with 28 points, while Brunson added 25 as the Knicks pulled away late to secure the win.

The title also carries symbolic weight. The Knicks last celebrated a championship in 1973, when they won the NBA Finals behind legends Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Earl Monroe. In the decades since, the franchise has endured instability, frequent coaching changes, and repeated postseason disappointments. The NBA Cup victory does not erase that history, but it does begin to reshape the narrative.

For a fan base starved for meaningful success, the moment carried significance beyond a midseason tournament. It validated the team’s roster construction, defensive identity, and late-game execution—areas that have often undermined past Knicks teams.
