The fairways of Chapel Hills Golf Club hummed with energy yesterday morning as the 11th Annual Alphas of Atlanta Open officially kicked off Alpha Derby Weekend. What began as an 8:00 AM shotgun start quickly transformed into a high-stakes, high-style demonstration of “Golf with a Purpose.”
The tournament, a staple of the metro-Atlanta social and athletic calendar, drew a diverse field of competitors ranging from seasoned scratch golfers to community leaders. Playing a Four-Person Best Ball format, teams navigated the rolling terrain of the Douglasville course not just for the leaderboard, but to support the Pi Gamma Lambda and RKL Education Foundations.
Competition Meets Community
While the atmosphere was collegiate, the competition remained sharp. Beyond the team trophies, players battled for individual honors in Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin categories. However, in true Alpha Derby fashion, the “Best Dressed” award for both male and female golfers rivaled the tournament championship in prestige, reflecting the event’s signature blend of athletic effort and sartorial excellence.
The “19th Hole” Impact
The event concluded with a networking lunch at the “19th Hole,” where participants transitioned from the green to the clubhouse to discuss the broader mission. Proceeds from today’s $150-per-player entry fees are earmarked for local scholarship funds, including the Randall D. Ponder Memorial Scholarship, aimed at empowering the next generation of Atlanta scholars.
The Kickoff of a Legacy Weekend
The Golf Classic serves as the opening act for a weekend-long itinerary. With the tournament in the books, the focus now shifts to the remaining events of Alpha Derby Weekend, continuing the momentum of fundraising and community engagement that has become a hallmark of the Alphas of Atlanta.
