Strong Defense, Limited Finish: Gladiators Drop 2–0 Decision to Icemen

After a hard-fought shootout win over rival South Carolina Stingrays at home, the Atlanta Gladiators remained on home ice to face another familiar opponent, the Jacksonville Icemen.

Atlanta entered the matchup with the upper hand in the season series, holding a 6–2 record against Jacksonville. The rivalry has been tightly contested in recent weeks, with the last two meetings both extending beyond regulation. The Gladiators secured an overtime win on February 6, followed by a shootout victory on February 27.

With playoff positioning at stake, the urgency was clear. A win tonight, paired with a regulation win on Friday against Jacksonville and a Greenville regulation loss to Savannah, would move Atlanta one step closer to clinching a Kelly Cup playoff berth.

In net for the Gladiators was TJ Semptimphelter.

The first period set the tone as a balanced, defensive battle. Atlanta’s defense stood strong, limiting Jacksonville to just five shots on goal, while generating 14 shots offensively.

Late in the period, with 20 seconds remaining, the Gladiators were forced into their first penalty kill following a Joey Cipollone infraction. The Icemen entered the game converting on just 13.9% of their power play opportunities this season. The period closed with Jacksonville still on the man advantage, carrying over more than 90 seconds of power play time into the second.

Atlanta’s penalty kill unit continued its strong form to begin the second period, successfully killing off the remaining time and reinforcing its 81.8% efficiency.

Momentum shifted shortly after.

The Icemen struck first at the 18:47 mark of the second period, as T.J. Friedmann found the back of the net to give Jacksonville the early edge.

Just moments later, at 19:05, the Gladiators earned their first power play opportunity of the night following a penalty on Jed Pietila.

Despite the late surge in action, neither team generated significant offensive volume in the second period. Jacksonville recorded nine shots on goal, while Atlanta finished with eight.

At the 1:53 mark in the third period, the Gladiators earned another power play opportunity but were unable to convert. A penalty on Craig Martin at 6:42 gave Atlanta another chance with the man advantage, followed by a third power play opportunity at 9:16.

After managing just eight shots on goal in the second period, the Gladiators responded with increased offensive pressure in the third, recording 12 shots by the 15:59 mark.

A penalty at 9:38 put Atlanta back on the penalty kill, but the unit held strong once again. However, late in the period, Jacksonville capitalized. At 17:46, Adam McMaster found the back of the net to extend the Icemen’s lead to 2–0.

Despite outshooting Jacksonville 38 to 21, the Gladiators were unable to close the gap, ultimately finishing the night in the loss column.

Atlanta will look to bounce back on Friday, March 20, when they travel to Jacksonville for the next matchup against the Icemen.
