The Atlanta Gladiators welcomed the Adirondack Thunder to Gas South Arena tonight for the first of a three-game home series. The matchup marks the first meeting between the two teams this season. Fans packed the arena for EMO Night, adding an electric atmosphere to the opening contest.
Adirondack struck first at the 2:19 mark of the opening period when Brannon McManus beat Gladiators goaltender T.J. Semptimphelter, assisted by Tag Bertuzzi and Conner Hutchinson, giving the Thunder an early 1-0 advantage.
The Gladiators were held off the scoreboard in the first period but delivered a defensively sound performance. Atlanta limited Adirondack to just 11 shots on goal while drawing no penalties. However, the Gladiators managed only six shots on goal themselves, struggling to generate offensive pressure.
Atlanta entered the first intermission trailing 1-0.
The Gladiators struck back within seconds of the second period, erupting the crowd with their first goal of the night. Brendan Less found the net for his second goal of the season, with assists from Mike McNamee and Chad Nychuk, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Thunder responded quickly at the 3:01 mark when Bertuzzi scored to reclaim the lead at 2-1. An Adirondack penalty gave Atlanta a power play opportunity, but the Gladiators were unable to capitalize. Atlanta’s penalty kill unit came up big twice in the period, successfully killing off penalties at the 7:31 and 14:52 marks to keep the deficit at one.
Bertuzzi struck again for his second goal of the night at the 18:05 mark, extending Adirondack’s lead to 3-1.
The Gladiators showed far more offensive aggression in the second period, outshooting the Thunder 16-7. However, Atlanta entered the final frame trailing 3-1.
The Thunder continued their dominance early in the third period when McManus scored his second goal of the night at the 1:47 mark, extending Adirondack’s lead to 4-1.
Atlanta’s power plays struggles persisted throughout the final frame. At the 12:12 mark, tensions boiled over as four players were penalized in a heated exchange between the teams. The Gladiators had another power play opportunity at the 14:34 mark but once again failed to convert, finishing the night 0-for-3 with the man advantage. The Gladiators fall 4-1 to the Thunder.
The Gladiators suffered their 11th loss of the season, dropping their record to 31-11-0.
Atlanta looks to bounce back tomorrow night on Valentine’s Day when the series continues. The game will feature the fan-favorite Teddy Bear Toss and 94 Weddings on Ice ceremony as special highlights.
