Brittney Sykes Traded to Storm as Mystics Add Zia Cooke and 2026 First-Round Pick

Just days after I spoke with Brittney Sykes about leading the Washington Mystics’ push for the playoffs, she now finds herself on a new team with a fresh opportunity. On Tuesday, the Mystics traded Sykes to the Seattle Storm in exchange for veteran forward Alysha Clark, guard Zia Cooke, and Seattle’s 2026 first-round draft pick.

The move signals a clear direction for both franchises—Seattle reinforcing its veteran core for a postseason run, and Washington continuing to invest in a young, developing roster.

A New Role for Sykes in Seattle
Sykes joins a Storm team currently in sixth place in the WNBA standings, featuring veteran stars Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins. The addition of Sykes brings elite defense, speed, and energy to a team with playoff aspirations.

When I spoke with Sykes on Sunday, her focus was squarely on helping the Mystics fight for a playoff spot. Now, she steps into a new situation in Seattle, where she will be expected to contribute immediately as the Storm look to make a push in the tightly contested Western Conference.

Washington’s Youth Movement Grows
The Mystics, meanwhile, continue to reshape their roster around emerging young talent. Acquiring Zia Cooke, a promising young guard, and a 2026 first-round pick reflects their long-term strategy. Cooke now joins a Mystics squad already featuring standout rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, both of whom have played significant roles this season. Citron has impressed with her scoring and rebounding, while Iriafen continues to develop into a reliable frontcourt presence.

Veteran Alysha Clark, who returns to Washington after previous stints with the franchise, brings leadership and stability to help guide the young roster through the remainder of the season.

What’s Next
For Seattle, the addition of Sykes could be the piece that strengthens their playoff positioning. For Washington, the trade adds depth, future flexibility, and reinforces a commitment to developing their young core.
