Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nickeil Alexander-Walker have always shared a last name, a love for the game, and a dream that began far from the bright lights of playoff basketball. Now, they find themselves on opposite sidelines in one of the most intense matchups of the 2025 NBA season — a family affair that’s become must-see TV.
More Than Cousins — Practically Brothers
Shai and Nickeil grew up like most tight-knit cousins: inseparable. They were born just weeks apart in 1998 in Toronto, with basketball woven into their upbringing. Their parents are siblings — Shai’s father, Vaughn Alexander, and Nickeil’s mother, Nicole Alexander — making the two athletes first cousins.
Their journey took a pivotal turn when they moved from Canada to the U.S. to attend Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There, they lived together — literally — in the same house, sharing the same room, and pursuing the same dream. Their high school coach, Zach Ferrell, once said:
“They did every moment of life together for two years while they were in Tennessee.”
That time wasn’t just about basketball. It was about brotherhood.
College Paths and NBA Beginnings
When it came time for college, the cousins went their separate ways — Shai to Kentucky, Nickeil to Virginia Tech — but their bond never wavered. Shai made an immediate splash with the Wildcats and declared for the NBA Draft after just one season, eventually being selected 11th overall in 2018. Nickeil followed suit a year later, going 17th overall in 2019.
Their NBA journeys haven’t mirrored each other, but they’ve both found their lanes.
Shai, now a full-fledged superstar and the 2024–25 NBA MVP, has led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the top of the West with his clutch scoring, poised leadership, and undeniable swag. Nickeil, a key rotation piece for the Minnesota Timberwolves, has carved out a reputation as a versatile, defensive-minded guard who thrives in high-pressure moments.
Guarding Bloodlines
With OKC and Minnesota clashing in the Western Conference Finals, the Alexander cousins are living out a moment they once imagined as teenagers in a shared bedroom — but now, they’re on opposite sides of history.
And in one of the more poetic wrinkles of the series, Nickeil has, at many times, been tasked with guarding his cousin. It’s an emotional and strategic battle. Nickeil knows Shai’s footwork, fakes, and rhythms better than most. Shai, in turn, understands how relentless and calculated Nickeil is on defense. Watching them go at each other is like watching a mirror — built on years of backyard battles and shared ambition.
Nickeil’s mom summed it up perfectly with a playful text to Shai’s dad before Game 1:
“It’s war now.”

In a recent interview, Nickeil shared:
“We’ve always talked about playing in the league, about making it. To do it like this? It’s a blessing. I’m proud of him — but I still want to beat him.”
