Ron Rivera Returns to Cal as Golden Bears’ First-Ever Football General Manager

In a full-circle moment more than four decades in the making, former NFL head coach and Cal All-American Ron Rivera is returning to his alma mater. The University of California, Berkeley has named Rivera the general manager of its football program—a newly created position focused on fundraising and revenue generation, made possible entirely through private philanthropy.

Rivera, who starred at linebacker for the Golden Bears from 1980 to 1983, has remained closely connected to the university throughout his career. He and his wife, Stephanie—who played basketball at Cal—are recognized as Builders of Berkeley, a designation for the university’s most generous supporters whose personal giving totals $1 million or more.

“My love and passion for Cal has never changed, and I couldn’t be more excited about the future of our football program,” Rivera said. “I am fired up to be coming home.”

Rivera brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as an NFL head coach for 12 seasons, including stints with the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders. Known for his leadership, integrity, and player-first approach, Rivera is expected to bring a steady and strategic presence to the evolving college football landscape.

The general manager role reflects a broader trend in collegiate athletics, particularly in football and basketball, as programs adapt to the new realities of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the NCAA transfer portal. Universities across the country are investing in leadership roles that blend on-field knowledge with off-field strategy to navigate this dynamic era.

Cal opens its 2025 season on the road against Oregon State on August 30.
