SEC goes 13-3 in Week 2, but Kentucky and Arkansas hit a wall

The SEC put together another dominant Saturday, going 13-3 in Week 2 as most of its ranked and unranked programs alike handled business against overmatched opponents. But two results stood out for the wrong reasons, as Kentucky and Arkansas both fell to unranked Group of Five and Pac-12 opponents in games that exposed real depth issues heading into conference play.

Georgia put on the most emphatic show of the day, blitzing Western Kentucky 70-20 behind five touchdown passes from Gunner Stockton. The Bulldogs led 49-0 at halftime, matching the most points scored in a single half in program history since 1950, and improved to 2-0 as they prepare for a trip to Arkansas in their SEC opener.

Alabama delivered the conference’s marquee result, dispatching Kentucky 45-17 in Lexington to open SEC play for both teams. Keelon Russell threw for 188 yards and a touchdown while the Crimson Tide’s rushing attack came alive after halftime, piling up 150 yards on the ground in the second half alone. Kentucky actually outgained Alabama 147-128 in the first half and led 17 points scored, a season-high mark against the Tide since 1988, but could not sustain it and fell to 1-1.

Mississippi State continued its early-season surge, knocking off Minnesota 38-13 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Kamario Taylor threw for 227 yards and three first-half touchdowns as the Bulldogs scored on their first four possessions and improved to 2-0, a start that has coach Jeff Lebby’s group looking like the real deal for the first time since 2022.

Vanderbilt needed a 21-point third quarter to shake off a scrappy Delaware team, ultimately prevailing 35-26 as Jared Curtis ran for two touchdowns and threw his first career passing score. LSU also survived a bumpy night, falling behind by only three points at halftime against Louisiana Tech before Lane Kiffin’s Tigers pulled away for a 45-14 win, overcoming three interceptions from quarterback Sam Leavitt in the process.

Elsewhere, the results were far more comfortable. Florida throttled Campbell 52-3, South Carolina survived a lightning delay to rout Towson 45-9 behind two punt-return touchdowns from Vicari Swain, Tennessee held off Georgia Tech 45-24 on the road, Auburn cruised past Southern Miss 43-8 behind three touchdowns from Byrum Brown, Ole Miss blew out Charlotte 41-9, and Texas A&M handled Arizona State 48-20.

The two losses tell a different story entirely. Kentucky’s defeat to Alabama, discussed above, dropped the Wildcats to 1-1 as they prepare for a trip to Texas A&M. Arkansas fared even worse, getting run off the field by Utah 43-10 in Salt Lake City. Devon Dampier accounted for four touchdowns and Wayshawn Parker added three scores as the Utes built a 29-3 halftime lead. It was the most lopsided loss of new Arkansas coach Ryan Silverfield’s seven-year career and dropped the Razorbacks to 1-1 heading into SEC play.

The headline number, though, remains 13-3. With SEC play about to open in earnest, the conference has once again shown its non-conference depth, even as Kentucky and Arkansas offer an early reminder that this league does not hand out easy weeks for long.
