The SEC has accomplished something it hasn’t done since 1997: the conference entered Week 2 of the college football season with every team undefeated.
All 16 SEC teams won their season openers, giving the conference a perfect 16-0 record heading into Week 2.
But the perfect start was never going to survive the weekend.
Missouri got Week 2 underway Friday night, defeating Kansas 38-21 to improve to 2-0. With the Tigers’ victory, the SEC moved to 17-0 in nonconference play to begin the season.
Now, Saturday brings a slate of major matchups—and at least one SEC team will take its first loss.

The SEC’s Perfect Start Won’t Survive Week 2
The significance of the SEC’s 16-0 opening is not that the conference can remain perfect through Week 2. It can’t.
Alabama and Kentucky will settle that Saturday afternoon.
Instead, the historic achievement is that every SEC team won its season opener for the first time since 1997, giving the conference a perfect 16-0 record entering Week 2.
Missouri has already added another win with its 38-21 victory over Kansas.
Now the rest of the conference gets its chance to keep the momentum going.
From Oklahoma-Michigan and Ohio State-Texas to Tennessee-Georgia Tech and Arkansas-Utah, the SEC has several opportunities to strengthen its national standing.
But when Alabama and Kentucky kick off in Lexington, history will officially give way to reality:
The SEC will have its first conference loss of the 2026 season.
