Former FSU Standout and Lowndes Legend Brings Championship Pedigree to Blue Devils
Marietta, GA — In a significant move that brings one of Georgia’s most decorated defensive backs into the coaching ranks, Greg Reid has accepted his first ever coaching position as defensive backs coach and director of recruiting at Marietta High School.
The announcement marks a new chapter for the high school Hall of Famer, former Florida State standout, and professional football veteran who spent years dominating in the Arena League and Canadian League. Now, Reid is ready to pass his expertise to the next generation of Georgia athletes.
“As a coach, I lead with four core values: toughness, effort, discipline, and pride,” Reid explained. “Toughness means handling adversity without excuses. Effort means giving your best every day, regardless of circumstances. Discipline means doing things the right way, consistently. Pride means representing our program, our school, and ourselves with class.”
A Full Circle Moment
In a twist of fate, Reid’s first coaching opportunity comes at the very program that ended Lowndes High School’s championship dreams in 2019. That year, Reid’s alma mater made their last title run, only to fall in the finals to Marietta. Now, he’ll bring that same championship intensity to the Blue Devils sideline.
“My plans will mainly focus on fundamentals, technique, effort, and football IQ,” Reid said about his coaching approach. “We will keep things simple, play fast, and execute with confidence.”
Marietta High School, coming off a 5-6 season (5-1 in region play), is looking to reclaim the glory that has eluded them since their last championship in 2019. With Reid’s championship pedigree and defensive prowess, the Blue Devils may have found the missing piece to their title puzzle.
Coaching Philosophy Rooted in Greatness
When asked about his coaching inspiration, Reid didn’t hesitate to name legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden as his guiding light.
“Bobby Bowden will always be my inspiration when it comes to coaching and how to coach kids,” Reid shared, reflecting on the Hall of Fame coach who led the Seminoles during Reid’s time in Tallahassee.
For Reid, coaching is about more than X’s and O’s. As a father of a young athlete, he understands the critical importance of developing young men both on and off the field. His holistic approach to player development extends far beyond the gridiron.
Beyond the Sidelines: The G5 Takeover Academy
In addition to his new role at Marietta, Reid is launching the G5 Takeover Academy in partnership with KB Sports Media. The innovative program will debut in summer 2027 as a five-day NFL Combine-style camp designed to develop complete athletes and well-rounded individuals.
The academy will feature:
- On-field training: Position-specific drills, agility work, and technique development for all positions
- Life skills education: NIL navigation, confidence building, communication skills, and financial literacy
- Inclusive opportunities: 40 spots dedicated to girls flag football participants
“I want to make sure students and athletes understand that there is a life outside of football,” Reid emphasized. “Everybody’s not going to make it to the NFL, and some people may not make it to the Canadian League or even any other professional football league. Some may have a career in broadcasting or coaching or marketing or as an agent. I just want to give these athletes the opportunity to see that there are a lot of other opportunities out there.”
The G5 Takeover Academy represents Reid’s commitment to developing not just better players, but better people equipped to succeed regardless of where their athletic careers lead them.
What the Blue Devils Can Expect
Reid’s arrival brings a wealth of experience from every level of football. Arguably one of the best high school football players in Georgia state history, his journey through college football at Florida State and into the professional ranks gives him a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed.
His defensive expertise, combined with his understanding of the modern game and commitment to fundamentals, positions Marietta to make a serious run at their first championship since 2019.
For the Blue Devils faithful, the addition of Greg Reid represents more than just a coaching hire—it’s a statement of intent. Championship pedigree has arrived in Marietta, and the future looks bright for a program ready to reclaim its place among Georgia’s elite.
