In a landmark ruling on February 20, 2025, Spain’s National Court delivered justice for Jenni Hermoso, finding former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales guilty of sexually assaulting her during the 2023 Women’s World Cup awards ceremony. The decision marks a significant victory for Hermoso and for women in sports, reinforcing the fight against misconduct and abuse of power in football.

The court imposed fines and compensation totaling over €13,000 and issued a restraining order prohibiting Rubiales from approaching within 200 meters of Hermoso or communicating with her for one year. Although he was acquitted of coercion charges, the guilty verdict sets a precedent for accountability in the sport. Rubiales has been granted 10 days to appeal the ruling.

The incident occurred on August 20, 2023, in Sydney, following Spain’s historic Women’s World Cup victory. During the medal ceremony, Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips without her consent, sparking global outrage and overshadowing the team’s triumph. While Rubiales insisted, “I am absolutely sure that she gave me her permission,” Hermoso testified that the act was “totally out of place” and left her feeling “disrespected.” She further expressed that the incident “tarnished” what should have been one of the happiest moments of her career.

Despite facing backlash and pressure, Hermoso stood firm in her pursuit of justice. Her bravery has been widely praised, and this verdict is seen as a defining moment for women’s football, signaling that inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated, regardless of a person’s position of power.

Following the incident, Rubiales faced mounting scrutiny and resigned three weeks later. FIFA later imposed a three-year ban on him. The court also cleared three other former RFEF officials—Jorge Vilda, Albert Luque, and Rubén Rivera—of coercion charges related to the case.

This ruling is more than a legal victory; it is a milestone in the ongoing fight for equality and respect in sports. Hermoso’s courage in speaking out has set a powerful example for athletes worldwide, ensuring that no one is above accountability.

This verdict not only brings justice for Hermoso but also strengthens the movement for safer, more respectful environments in women’s football and beyond.
