Starr’s Mill earned its first win of the season Friday night, defeating Griffin 27-3 behind two rushing touchdowns from running back Spencer Ukleja and a defense that turned Griffin mistakes into points. Griffin entered the game 5-1 and fell to 5-2 with the loss.
Starr’s Mill led 6-3 after the first quarter. Nolan Blackwell scored the Panthers’ touchdown, while Griffin put together a scoring drive of its own before the Starr’s Mill defense held the Bears to a field goal.
Those were the only points Griffin would score. The Bears struggled with ball security in the second quarter, as bad snaps and fumbles at quarterback stalled the offense. Starr’s Mill recovered a loose ball in Griffin territory with a little more than four minutes left in the half, and Ukleja ran in the touchdown to make it 13-3.
The pattern continued after halftime. A blocked kick led to another Starr’s Mill recovery with a little more than two minutes left in the third quarter, and Ukleja scored again to extend the lead to 20-3. Through three quarters, Griffin had not reached the red zone.
Freshman quarterback Eddie Lovett ran in the Panthers’ last touchdown for the 27-3 final.
Starr’s Mill, now 1-5 overall and 1-1 in Region 3-AAAAA, travels to Harris County on Friday, October 16
