Kiffin Returns to Oxford as No. 7 LSU Faces No. 8 Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin returns to Oxford today for the first time since leaving Ole Miss, leading the LSU Tigers into a Week 3 matchup against the program he coached for six seasons. The meeting comes with both teams undefeated at 2-0 and ranked in the AP Top 10, with LSU at No. 7 and Ole Miss at No. 8.

Kiffin went 55-19 over six seasons in Oxford, leading the Rebels to six consecutive bowl appearances, four 10-win seasons, and an 11-1 regular season in 2025. He also helped develop players such as Jaxon Dart, who was selected 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Walter Nolen, who was selected 16th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. Kiffin also brought Trinidad Chambliss to Ole Miss after Chambliss won two national Division II championships at Ferris State, one as a starter in 2024.

Now at LSU, Kiffin has built a roster featuring more than 40 transfers, including former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt. LSU has opened the season with dominant victories over Clemson and Louisiana Tech, defeating the two teams by a combined 96-24. The Tigers are averaging 48.0 points and 586.0 yards per game while allowing 12.0 points and 221.5 yards per game.

Kiffin knows the attention surrounding his return will be significant, but he said the game ultimately comes down to the players.

“Well, I think it is unusual… one team you built and then now a new team that you’re building,” Kiffin said. “And… probably really unusual situation that way, but I know obviously a lot’s going to be made about me, but this is about the players being prepared really well and playing really well.”

Kiffin also pointed to the challenge of playing Ole Miss in Oxford, where the Rebels have won 13 consecutive home games dating back to 2024.

“It won’t be about all the other stuff and all the noise and everything. It’ll be about how well we practice, how well we prepare, so how well do we play on game day going into a place that, you know, has had a lot of success there,” Kiffin said.

Pete Golding, Kiffin’s former assistant coach, now leads Ole Miss. Golding took over the program following the 2025 regular season and led the Rebels to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Golding said the familiarity between the two programs is extensive after his time working with Kiffin.

“You know, to me I think it goes both obviously that there’s a lot that you know about them on both sides. You know, them about us, us about them. So, there’s a very big database, right, of going against somebody for three and a half years, every spring, every fall camp, all the scrimmages.”

That familiarity, Golding said, can also make it easy to overthink the matchup. He emphasized that Ole Miss has to focus on preparing properly rather than becoming consumed by the storyline surrounding Kiffin’s return.

“Absolutely. And there’s an emotional piece to every week and there’s so many different things that are involved. So, I think it’s going to be the team that can eliminate the noise and the distractions to be able to focus on preparing the right way and practicing really well.”

Kiffin said he has also tried to remove some of that pressure from his LSU players.

“I told the players today, man, like you don’t have anything to worry about as far as like attention on you all week and everything. There’s just going to be so much attention, hatred, everything on me,” Kiffin said. “I said, you just get to go play. And I said, really, the pressure is on them.”

While they are now coaching against each other, Kiffin and Golding maintain their relationship.

“From a friendship standpoint like I developed a really good relationship with them for over three and a half years and uh you know from a football professional standpoint. Golding stated. “We don’t bounce ideas off of each other, anything like that like we used to. But yeah, I definitely receive a text, or I’ll text him or a call about other stuff that you know that goes on and things like that. So, still friends.”

The football matchup itself features two productive offenses and defenses that have performed well through the opening two games.

LSU has recorded 1,172 yards of total offense, including 456 rushing yards and 716 passing yards. The Tigers have scored 12 touchdowns while converting 58% of their third downs.

Leavitt has accounted for 574 passing yards and nine total touchdowns through two games. Princewill Umanmielen has five sacks, while LSU’s defense has recorded 10 sacks and 17 tackles for loss.

Golding discussed what makes Leavitt difficult to defend after watching him at Arizona State.

“I remember watching him back at Arizona State and was just like his athletic ability there, you know, obviously he led, you know, in scrambles every year when he’s there, you know, and all those types of things, how athletic he was. He’s got a big arm.”

Ole Miss enters the matchup with 908 yards of total offense through two games. Chambliss has completed 44 of 62 passes for 561 yards, five touchdowns and one interception, while Kewan Lacy has rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Chambliss has also thrown a touchdown pass in 15 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in Ole Miss program history. Lacy has recorded a rushing touchdown in 11 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the FBS.

The matchup will be the 115th all-time meeting between LSU and Ole Miss, dating back to 1894. LSU leads the series 66-44-4, while the teams are tied 11-11-1 when playing in Oxford. LSU holds an 11-6 advantage in Magnolia Bowl games, and the home team has won 12 of the last 14 meetings.

Ole Miss won the most recent meeting, defeating No. 4 LSU 24-19 in Oxford in 2025.

LSU lists starting linebacker TJ Dottery as questionable.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford and will be televised on ABC.

For Kiffin, it is a return to Oxford and his first opportunity to face the program he led for six seasons. For Golding and Ole Miss, it is the first SEC game of the season against a Top-10 LSU team.

With both teams undefeated, the 115th meeting between LSU and Ole Miss carries the weight of a Top-10 matchup while placing Kiffin back on the opposite sideline from the program he helped build.
