Many within the Clark Atlanta University community were left confused and disappointed following the university’s announcement regarding the departure of head football coach Teddy Keaton.
In an official statement, the university said:
“On behalf of Clark Atlanta University, I announce the departure of Coach Teddy Keaton, CAU Head Football Coach, who joined us in December 2023. His tenure included a remarkable 7-3-1 season in 2024, culminating in a championship appearance. We extend our gratitude to Coach Keaton for his leadership and contributions to our football program and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Keaton’s departure comes after a period of notable progress for the Panthers. Hired in December 2023, he quickly made an impact, guiding Clark Atlanta to a 7-3-1 record during the 2024 season. That campaign included a championship game appearance and represented a significant turnaround for a program that had struggled in recent years.
In just one season, Keaton helped reestablish competitiveness and renewed optimism around CAU football. As a result, the announcement raised questions among supporters who viewed his tenure as the beginning of sustained growth rather than a short-term chapter. While the university acknowledged his leadership and contributions, the timing of the decision has created uncertainty about the program’s immediate direction.
The Panthers’ 2025 season did not mirror the success of the 2024 campaign, marking a step back from the progress achieved the year prior. Even so, Keaton’s impact remains evident. During his brief tenure, he elevated expectations and demonstrated that Clark Atlanta could compete at a championship level within the conference.
What’s Next for CAU Football?
With Keaton’s departure, Clark Atlanta now shifts its focus to the next phase of the program. The university will be tasked with identifying leadership capable of building on the foundation established over the past two seasons while addressing the challenges that surfaced in 2025. As the Panthers move forward, the emphasis will be on restoring consistency, maintaining competitiveness within the SIAC, and determining how best to carry momentum into the future.
